Juicer Guide

Welcome to my site! I’m John and I LOVE juicing. I want to share my years of experience through my best juicer reviews, and help you navigate the what seems to be an endless varieties of brands and styles. Let me guide you in your purchase of the best juicer for your household!

Before Buying Your Juicer

There is a lot to consider before buying a new appliance. Before handing over your hard earned money for a shiny new kitchen appliance ask yourself the following questions.

Budget: There is a wide price range when it comes to this particular kitchen appliance. There are extractors that can be found for under $50. And then you have the high end commercial extractors that are worth over $500. You will almost always pay more for a masticating extractor than its centrifugal counterpart. The sweet spot where you get a really high quality product, and avoid unnecessarily expensive models seems to be around $250-$350. But there are few gems that can be bought for just around $100.

Centrifugal vs Masticating:  Before making your selection you need to think about what exactly the type of drinks you’d like to be able to make. Some specialize in fruit, some in vegetables and others are decent in both areas but are not 100% to a standard that the specialized one can do it to. If you want mostly fruit drinks, read the centrifugal reviews. If you want to juice leafy greens and vegetables you should head over and read some masticating reviews.

Features: Most may look generic, but what you don’t see is what will dictate the life of your appliance. Quality of materials, BPA free plastics, ease of clean up, quality of the mesh filter screens, quality of the auger/blades. And the list goes on. Make sure it comes with a warranty. Read and get familiar with it before using the product. Never throw it away as warranty claim information you may need will be on that form, if your appliance experiences a failure.

Cleaning: One of my dislikes when it comes to making own drinks is definitely the clean up. I dislike it so much I refuse to even list a juicing machine that is not made for easy clean up. Your drink is the healthiest when its freshly made, and should be consumed right away. So lets completely skip the part where you have to clean your appliance for 15 minutes.

Centrifugal Juicers

Centrifugal machines are more common around many kitchens, a fact that is attributed to their affordability. They take an upright or vertical design. You simply push the ingredients into a swiftly spinning chamber that has sharp teeth at the base. The teeth shred the ingredients into pulp before the centrifugal motion extracts the liquid out of the pulp. It is then passed through the mesh filter, further pushed out through the sprout. Most models propel the pulp outside through a separate collection chamber once everything has been completely extracted.

Centrifugal machines are ideal for soft and hard fruits and vegetables. They do not work well with leafy greens such as kale and spinach or even wheat grass.

You have to take a few precautionary measures. You need to keep an eye on the spin rate. A high spinning speed increases the chances of foaming, oxidizing and loss of essential enzymes. You need to be keen with the feed tube as well. The larger the feed tube, the higher the chances of losing smaller pieces of ingredients and you may end up with more pulp and less delicious drink.

Masticating Juicers

One distinct difference between masticating and centrifugal extractors is the design. While centrifugal extractors are vertically designed, masticating ones usually take a horizontal design. They have a tube that contains an auger that extends to the motorized base. Just like centrifugal ones, you have to push the ingredients on top of the tube, but this time the ingredients are crushed and squeezed by the auger. The extracted liquid drains out the tube’s underside, and the pulp is pushed out at the end of the tube.

Due to their ability to squeeze and crush the ingredients slowly, masticating machines are ideal for leafy greens and white grass in addition to fruits and vegetables. The drinks produced by masticating ones tends to last longer than the one made by a centrifugal ones.
